The current trend in healthcare is to prevent diseases rather than to let them happen then treat them. Preventing different medical conditions and pathologies has many benefits. When a person gets a disease, they’ll be in variable amounts of discomfort, and depending on the condition might face morbidities or even mortality. At JW Family Medicine in Fulshear, TX, that’s not something we want to happen.
The goal of preventive medicine is to keep people as healthy as possible. While some things are out of the control of doctors, there’s still plenty we can do to keep people disease-free. At JW Family Medicine, we provide preventive medicine services to almost all our patients.
Visiting your doctor regularly is one of the best ways to prevent disease and morbidity. Prevention isn’t restricted to preventing the disease from happening, but it also includes preventing complications. A person with diabetes, for example, will benefit from the prevention of nerve, kidney, and eye affection through check-ups and screenings.
We also provide screenings for people who are completely healthy, based on the most recent guidelines and research. Colon cancer screening is indicated in men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. Cervical cancer screening starts as early as the age of 21. There are many other screening protocols like those for breast cancer, aortic aneurysms, and others. Keeping up with them can help us detect problems early, so treatment can begin immediately.
Keeping up with your vaccinations is something we can’t recommend enough here at JW Family Medicine. Taking your influenza vaccine each year before or at the start of winter can spare you from getting the flu, which can be disabling for a few days or even a week.
Adults who received the Tdap vaccine are encouraged to get a Td booster every ten years. Additionally, people over 60 and those with certain conditions need to get the pneumococcal vaccine. Children vaccinations are just as important and need to be taken according to schedule. We can tell you what vaccines you’re due at each visit.
