At JW Family Medicine in Fulshear, TX, we perform minor surgical procedures in-office all the time. These procedures are done for minor issues that don’t require an operating room and general anesthesia.
Our patients are often surprised that we perform small surgical procedures in our office here at JW Family Medicine. The truth is that these procedures are safe to perform in-office, and if we encounter any difficulties or predict that they might be troubling them, then we’ll refer you to a general surgeon for further assessment.
Incising and draining an abscess is something we can perform in-office. Abscesses can be painful and hard to tolerate. The only way most abscesses will heal is if they’re incised. The strongest antibiotics alone won’t be enough to clear the infection caused by an abscess.
Additionally, patients feel an immediate sense of relief once the abscess is drained.
Foreign body removals are also easily performed in most cases. We get patients with foreign bodies stuck in their ears and noses several times throughout the year. Postponing the removal of these foreign objects can cause serious complications, including severe infections. Ear irrigation is a routine procedure that we also perform.
Draining an abscess takes less than 10 minutes in most cases. Foreign body removals are also short, and in both scenarios, you’ll be fine to drive home. If an abscess is too large, however, we might recommend having someone to drive you home.
Those with skin lesions might require the direct injection of drugs into the affected area of skin. Topical and oral drugs aren’t always enough, and the only way to deliver high concentrations of a drug is to inject it directly.
Patients suffering from osteoarthritis might also benefit from the injection of drugs, mainly corticosteroids, into their joints for pain relief. Corticosteroids injected into a joint will have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, thereby greatly reducing pain and discomfort.
At JW Family Medicine, we perform joint and intra-lesional injections. These take less than a few minutes, and you’ll be able to go home straight away. Some conditions will require repeated injections, which we would be glad to perform.
